We could have met under better circumstances. Maybe she thought I was a loser from the very beginning... It had started on a Tuesday morning when I was running late for work. I’d just closed the door to my apartment and I heard the lock click. Feeling around in my pants pockets, I realized my keys were still on the table.
“Crap!” I yelled and started pulling on the doorknob, twisting it as if the more effort I put into it the less locked it would be. I kicked the door a few times for good measure, yelled again, and then proceed to bang on the door with my fists even though my cat Beanbag certainly wouldn’t be capabl
My head feels like smashed glass… what the hell happened? I replay the last events I can remember. The guys and I were out celebrating… something… I think I left to head home because I had work tomorrow… or possibly today, depending on what time it is… then there was a thunderstorm. I think I got a flat tire, and… that’s it, that’s all I can remember. I’m not in my car now. I’m not anywhere I recognize. According to my watch it’s 2:17. AM or PM? I have no idea. Did I have too much to drink? Did I get struck by lightning. I rub my forehead and see blood on my hand. Okay, definit

I’ve never been what you’d call a “responsible person.” I don’t think before I act, and I usually get myself yelled at for causing trouble. Prime example:
When I was eight, my best friend Gideon and I were playing in the park. He was on the monkey bars and I was on the swingset. Ever the thrillseeker - and attention hog, I admit, but when you’re small and easily ignored you’ll do a lot for a little attention - I screeched, “Look, I’m a flying squirrel!” and leapt off at the peak of my swing. I got a lot of air, but ultimately I came crashing down into the bark dust like a ragdoll an

I looked up, trying to see out of the hole. I was a long way down, though, and it had gotten dark outside besides, so I could see nothing out there. I took a look at the tunnels surrounding me, and with the toe of my shoe I made a little x in the dirt in front of the path I’d just come back from. If I got lost down here, then everything I’d been through today would have been for nothing. Surveying the other tunnels, I briefly contemplated going down the path I’d seen the tall man in the suit go down earlier, but I really didn’t want to have another run-in with him if I could hep it. He hadn’t done anything but s

I’d have gone after him, I’d have just dove in reaching for his hand, had the sinkhole not closed as suddenly as it had appeared. That seemed to be the trend of the day, strange things happening and then not happening, and now that I had been left alone I had an even greater need to reassure myself of my sanity. So, with some difficulty, I picked myself up and made my way back to our door, walking inside. I picked the mail and the mail key up from where I’d left them, set them on the dining room table, and stepped into the kitchen.
A pan lay on the floor, he’d dropped it to come to my side. I picked it up and set it

I hadn’t walked three steps from our house when it started happening. It was cloudy, nearly dusk, when out of nowhere a bird fell out of the sky and landed on the gravel road in front of me. I rushed to check on it, cradling it in one hand, but the thing was dead. It was a magpie, and the white of its breast was smattered in blood. I gently set it down on the lawn, standing to resume my walk, when several more birds fell from the sky - a crow, a jay, and a pigeon all a ways apart from each other. There were no arrows, no holes in the birds, no explanation as to why this was happening. I shuddered a bit, but chose to ignore it and conti

The Doctor and the Dead Man
There was a loud crackling sound in the darkness, followed by silence. Johnny could not force his eyelids to open. In fact, he couldn’t move a single muscle. His entire body was numb, his hearing seemed to be the only sense that was functioning. There were some other noises in the darkness, soft rustling like cloth being moved, the clinking of glass and shuffling of feet. As if being rendered blind and paralyzed wasn’t unsettling enough, being subjected to these strange noises with no explanation was causing Johnny to panic. He couldn’t feel himself breathing, if he even was breathing. What was going on?
A throaty chuckle
